HRmanagers, school career counselors, and even professional resume writers cant seem to agree onthe appropriate length for a resume today.The internet - particularly in the guise of LinkedIn and other professionally oriented social media sites - has changed how we look at resumes. Instead of flipping through hard copies, we now scroll seamlessly throughPDF resumes without looking at page counts. LinkedIn, meanwhile, breaks the average job seekers professional profile into a series of interconnected sections on an unbroken webpage. Video resumes dont even have page numbers - just runtimes.Some pros say the proper length of your resume dependson the length of your work history to date. A recent college graduate has less experience and needs only one page, whereas someone with 30+ years of work experience should have two pages.Id like to propose a different approach. For me, the answer to How long should my resume be? is It depends on how good of a story you have to tell.You may be young, but you may have lots of internships, travel experience, and work experience that would easily justify two pages. You may be older, but you may have spent your career only working for a couple of companies, which could easily fit on a taut one-pager. If youre in an academic or scientific field, your extensive credentials and publishing historycould easily pour over into three or more pages.Content CountsWhat really determines your resume lengthis how your resume is written. Dont offer endless bullet points describing your job duties. We know what a bank teller does. What employers want to know is what youachieved as a bank teller. How did you make the position better while you had it? How did you improve efficiency and increase revenue for the company?Avoid passive sent ence departureers like handled, assisted, attended, or responsible for. Resume readers have short attention spans, so get straight to the point by starting your sentences with strong action wordslike managed, created, grew, organized, and designed, and then follow up by quantifyingeach accomplishment when possible.If you dont start strong and keepyour readersattention, they will bail on your resume regardless of its length. Weak would be starting with an objectivestatement. Itsa waste of space - we all know your objective is to get the job for which youre applying. A stronger start would be tobegin with asummary paragraph that names the companies youve worked for and your major achievements. Sell the reader on what you can do for them, not what you want to do for yourself.Edit your work and have others review it to ensure you are using the fewest - and strongest - words possible. You want to get your resume as tight as possible, like Superman squeezing coal into a diamond. If its one page, great. If you can flesh it out with more relevant statistics, go to two pages.Ive seen strong, concise two-pagers, and cluttered, boring one-pagers. Size doesnt matter unless you abuse itand, ultimately, abuse the reader. Theodore von Krmn Theodore von Krmn Theodore von KrmnKnown as the father of supersonic flight, Theodore von Krmn (1881 1963) made major contributions to aviation and space technology, aerodynamics, and improved aircraft performance during an illustrious career.Von Krmn welches born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1881, and as early as six years of age welches recognized as a mathematical prodigy. He won the prestigious Eotvos Lorand Prize for the best student in mathematics and science in the entire country upon his graduation from the Minta Gymnasium in Budapest at the age of 16. He graduated in 1902 with high honors from the Palatine Joseph Polytechnic in Budapest with a degree in mechanical engineering. After a year of mandatory military service, he received his doctorate under the tutelage of the famous aerodynamicist, Ludwig Prandtl, at the University of Gttingen in 1908 and remained as an associate hochschulprofessor until 1912.Von Krmns interest in aerodynamics was piqued while he v isited Paris in 1908 and observed a short flight by Henry Farman in a test airplane, five years after the Wright Brothers famous flight at Kitty Hawk. In his aerodynamics research at the University of Gottingen, he observed the presence of eddies (counter-rotating currents) in the wake of a moving object, now known as the Krmn Vortex Trail. His discovery on the structure of airflow led to further studies on air turbulence that contributed to advances in the design and performance of aircraft. His research further helped establish the improved stability and functionality of swept-back wings.Theodore von Krmn is known as the father of supersonic flight.In 1913, he struck out on his own to become a professor in aeronautics and mechanics at the Technical University at Aachen, Germany, and was soon thereafter appointed the director of the Aachen Aerodynamics Institute at the age of 31. While at Aachen, he met Hugo Junkers and collaborated with him in the aerodynamic design of the Junkers J-1 transport airplane, which was the first cantilevered wing, all metal airplane.During World War I, he served in the military for the Austro-Hungarian Empire and became the head of research in the air force. At the Military Aircraft Factory in Fischamend Austria, he led the development of the first helicopter, tethered to the ground, that was able to maintain hovering flight. This flying machine was developed to solve problems plaguing the observation balloons then in use.He first visited the United States in the Fall of 1926 to consult with the Douglas Aircraft Company on the establishment of a new graduate school at the California Institute of Technology Aeronautical Lab. Four years later he returned as director of the school and his laboratory became the most prominent in the world of aeronautical sciences. It later became the present NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and he directed Americas first governmental long-range missile and space-exploration research program for the U.S . He was responsible for creating the Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development (AGARD), part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and a group that has played a major role in the aeronautical advancements of NATO countries. One of the educational and research institutes of AGARD becam e the von Krmn Institute for Fluid Dynamics, a leading aerodynamics laboratory known worldwide.By the end of his distinguished career, he had published more than 200 papers, advanced scientific collaboration from world leading scientists, developed many unique theories of aeronautical and space science, and played an important role in the creation of supersonic aircraft and ballistic missiles. In 1963, he was awarded the first National Medal of Science by President John Kennedy. So for a ausverkauf executive in the entertainment industry (the profession discussed in the post) Id prefer to see something like thisSales executive with 15+ years in the entertainment industry ABC, NBC, Sony Music Warner Bros MBA, WhartonThis headline tells a recruiter all he needs to know to click through and learn more and it does it without being icky and boastful.As you build your LinkedIn profile, remember that recruiters dont give two hoots about your personal brand. They only care about whether you fit the criteria for the position they are currently trying to fill.
