Keywords on Your Resume-How to Make Them Work for You - Hallie Crawford

Keywords on Your Resume-How to Make Them Work for You Career coaching clients ask us all the time about the software companies use to filter through resumes online and how to get past it to get the interview in their job search. They don’t want to get booted out of the process in this first stage if they feel qualified for the job just because they may not know the keywords the company will use to filter. It’s an understandable concern and something critical to consider, not just on your resume, but on your cover letter and your LinkedIn profile as well. You can use keywords: In your summary. In your expertise and experience section. In your header. Be careful though, don’t clump them all together. It will appear too obvious and won’t read well. Employers and headhunters will search for people with your brand of talent using specific keywords so  it’s critical to consider using keywords that will appeal to both groups. Take a look at this straightforward resume article for more information, especially the “How Do I Find the Right Keywords?” section. Then, add the following ways to find keywords to your list: 1) Job boards like Indeed.com and also industry-specific job boards. The latter can really give you specific ideas about keywords to use in your search for your dream job because you’ll only see job openings specific to the industry you are interested in. 2) Websites like Glassdoor.com where you can search for specific job titles and also salary. Top 10 Characteristics of Successful and Creative Women

Top 10 Characteristics of Successful and Creative WomenIf you havent seen Wonder Woman yet, add it to your to-do list you will be newly inspired to kick butt and take names. If you want to be all the woman you can be and achieve the great things you know youre destined for, then there are a few things you can try to increase your chances of world domination. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Turns out, women who achieve amazing things tend to have a few traits in common. Here are a few that you can attempt to cultivate or recognize in yourself.1. AssertivenessIf you find yourself backing into requests or questions and/or constantly apologizing for yourself, then you might need to harden your assertiveness quotient. Trade in your innerhalb pussycat for an inner tiger. Just try not to be too ferocious to over-compensate.2. EmpathyA lot of women think that typically female traits like empathy are to be downplayed, when instead they should be considered an asset. Empathy means you can listen and understand where other people are coming fromtheir needs and feelings and desires. Learn to be understanding and intuitive, without getting derailed by sentimentality.3. PassionYou may have lots of skill and experience, but without passion for what youre doing, youre likely not to elevate your work to the next stage. Loving what you do means innovating, striving, challenging yourself. And it makes the time you put in pleasurable and worth every moment of your journey to the top. Passion also brings energy, which youll need to persevere.4. ImperfectionTrying to be perfect or expecting perfection from those around you is a one-way ticket to everyone being miserable. Really successful women know this isnt possible all the time. Embrace your flaws. Find people who complement your strengths. And keep your head down. Be the best you can be at each thing, then move on.5. PowerRise to the top. Once you get there, you get to write your ow n rules. Youll find, paradoxically, that the higher up you go, the easier your life gets. Youll have more control in the kind of workplace you create for yourself and your employees.6. FaithBelieve in yourself. Believe that you will be successful. Believe in your crazy ideas. And be ready to think on your feet in order to realize them. You could also call this egothe confidence to get done what you need to get done (rather than the inflated head variety).7. AdaptabilityIf stress flummoxes you, then you might have a hard time in your rise to success. Youll feel more capable of handling this amount of stress at different times, of course, but in general, the more you build up your tolerance the better. Find ways to make your life as restful, de-stressed, and easy as possible. And concentrate your mental energy on the work at hand, rather than hyperventilation.8. CourageWhat would you do if you had no fear? Taking risks doesnt necessarily mean doing reckless things, but it does mean ma king calculated decisions and trying things that might be considered risky.9. Self careReally successful people rest as hard as they play. They take good physical care of themselves exercising and eating right, taking mental health days if possible, and knowing when to say no and when to take alone time, etc. Theyre able to step away from their never ending to-do lists and do something that will keep them going with enough fuel to keep powering through.10. GratitudeReally successful women realize that their success did not occur in a vacuumboth at home and at work. And they are able to say thank you and express genuine gratitude and appreciation to the people who have helped them get where they are. They treat their colleagues with kindness and respect and receive respect and admiration in return.

The Future is Abril Peña Advocate, Engagement Coordinator and Avid Solo-Traveler

The Future is Abril Pea Advocate, Engagement Coordinator and Avid Solo-Traveler Abril Pea, a student at Baruch College, has already learned how to use her life experience for good. After benefitting from Virtual Enterprises International (VE) a non-profit that helps students discover careers and prepare for a financially secure future as a high school student and giving a moving speech about her involvement, she welches invited to join the team. Now, as an Engagement Coordinator for the organization, she shares her passion for partal development with her students. One growth experience she prides herself on? Moving to Germany to work with a VE partner completely alone. We asked Pea mora about her important work with VE and how she prioritizes her schoolwork, professional work and personal life. Then, she shared great advice for young women who want to get involved in their own communities. How are you making an impact on your school or local community?Im an Engagement Coordinator an d alumna of VE, a nonprofit business program serving 15,000 students from 430 schools thats geared towards helping students discover careers, igniting their entrepreneurial spirit, and preparing them for fulfilling, financially secure futures. Since 2015, Ive been part of a wonderful team supporting students journeys towards professional and personal development as they start their own businesses, practice personal finance skills and test-drive dream careers. What made you passionate about the project or role thats allowing you to make a difference? My absolute favorite part of working with VE is that the program is an opportunity for social mobility to students who normally would notlage get the education, resources, and network that they need to thrive as young adults. In my own experience, I went to a high school where a majority of students came from lower-income households, were children of immigrants, and didnt have high expectations for their futures. The students in our VE pro gram, including me, were able to say they were learning something at school that they would use in the future. With 50% of our schools eligible for free or reduced lunch, its clear that we are helping provide access to a unique educational experience to students who wouldnt have had the opportunity to learn vital career and life advice otherwise. The mora I get to connect with our students, the more I realize the importance of the work my team and I are doing, and how much further we have to go.How did you get in this position? Were you elected, selected, or did you start the project yourself? What steps did you take to fulfill this role? Did you study something specific, join this club first year, etc. After graduating from the VE program in 2014, I welches eager to give back to the program that brought me out of my shell after being a timid high schooler. For a year, I volunteered at every chance I could, even serving as an alumni panelist in between finals exams During this time, I spoke about my experience developing my career readiness at the NYC Career Technical Education Appreciation Event. The NYC VE Regional Director was in attendance, and he was so delighted to hear my speech that he and the national director eventually brought me for an interview when they began to recruit for the VE Fellowship program. Since then, I have rose from VE Fellow to Program Associate to Engagement Coordinator, all while pursuing my Bachelors Degree at Baruch College. What other activities, projects, or jobs do you do at school? Spill your resumeIm going to be frank I tried to join clubs numerous times at school, and none of them really clicked for me. Some opportunities or projects felt disingenuous for me to take if I was joining with the sole intention of making my resume pop or finding for the right connections (which, if this is your goal, then more power to you). Also, I needed money So, instead, I worked as a hostess at a Harlem steakhouse, volunteered and then work ed with VE, and traveled to 9 countries in the span of my college career. I speak highly about my short-lived hostess experience in particular because I learned some important skills there that platzdeckchen me up for my future career a persons bark is much bigger than their bite and kindness takes you farther than spite. What is an accomplishment youre proud of?In the fall of 2017, VE presented me the opportunity to intern with one of our partners EUROPEN-PEN International for three months in Germany. I was nearly 4,000 miles away from my comfort zone, and still managed to travel to four countries, work with eighty international students, help coordinate a case study competition and meet incredible colleagues along the way. It was the first time I was away from home for so long and my first true taste of independence. Looking back on it today, I use that experience as a foundation for what I can accomplish next, telling myself if I could do that, I can do this. What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome? On my Germany trip, there were moments where I thought I didnt belong there, where I thought I was in over my head, and where impostor syndrome and jet lag would keep me up for hours. I was in a new country, trying to understand a new culture and working full-time in a new office. After work, I was left with no one but myself. The fear of failure was a regular occurrence. But the more I forced myself to go outside, talk to people, travel to different cities and get lost, the more I learned about myself and my capabilities.I asked my boss at the time what I should be doing to become better prepared for my future career and he replied Im not saying this because youre sitting here right now, but exactly what youre doing now traveling and meeting new people and experiencing different ways of living and working.By the end of the trip, I was very proud of the work I did with EUROPEN-PEN International. I experienced solo-traveling in four countries, and most importantly, I got the chance to better understand myself. What advice do you have for women who want to make a difference at their school? If youve been watching Tidying Up on Netflix, take the Marie Kondo approach to the choices you make at school, work, or in life does it bring you joy? When looking for an opportunity to make a difference, sit down and list the things you care deeply about, what gets you excited, what you can talk about for hours. Then, have conversations with people who care about the same things you do and actively look for opportunities to work on said things.Who is YOUR Fairygodboss? Why?The first person who comes to mind is my former colleague and engagement extraordinaire, Shauna Ruda. Shauna, our former Director of Engagement, taught me how building authentic relationships with our donors and partners benefits everyone. She never misses an opportunity to uplift the people around her.Lightning Round Whats Your Karaoke Song?I belt out a mean Buy You A Drank. I am T-Pain. I do the auto-tune, and the snaps. I do it all.Lightning Round Whats Your Favorite Book?A recent favorite is Heart Talk by Cleo Wade. Any given page is filled with warm advice and kind words that can be applied to your personal and professional life. I reach for it whenever Im having a bad day.Lightning Round Whats Your Favorite Movie? Before I admit my answer, let me make one thing clear I hate a predictable plot. I often stray away from cheap romantic comedies that sell the idea that you have to be completely annoyed by someone before falling in love with them or that women are meant to be saved from single-hood. That being said, Crazy, Stupid, Love is definitely my go-to movie when I want a cozy rom-com without the cheesy plot.Lightning Round Whats Your Favorite Quote?Growing up, my mom was a huge groupie of Frida Kahlo. She actually almost named me Frida. So, it comes to no surprise that one of my favorite quotes is by the Mexican artist herself Pies, para qu los qui ero si tengo alas para volar? (Translation Feet, what do I need them for when I have wings to fly?)Fairygodboss is all about celebrating female leaders so every other week, we celebrate a young woman who is making a difference in her school or local community. Do you know a student leader whos making an impact? Celebrate her and thank her by nominating her here.

Will 2017 Spur Your Employees to Seek New Opportunities

Will 2017 Spur Your Employees to Seek New Opportunities Were a couple of months into the new year, and many people have abandoned their entscheidungs already. However, theres one resolution that might stick and its one that employers should pay attention to.According to a WorkSphere survey from Spherion Staffing, 62 percent of American workers are planning to make changes in their professional lives. While some of these people are looking to change jobs or careers, others want to improve their performance, earn more money, or start their own businesses.Although the new year is a common benchmark Americans use to hit refresh, 62 percent of those who have a resolution for 2017 to find a new job or career have considered doing so for more than a year, according to our survey, says Sandy Mazur, division president for Spherion Staffing. This year, the top three factors that have workers considering a career change include higher pay (56 percent), a desire to try something new (45 percent), and better work/life balance (44 percent).Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their reputation for job hopping, millennials are experiencing professional wanderlust at a rate of two-to-one.Millennials are most motivated to take on a new professional endeavor in the New Year in fact, 22 percent plan to find a new job in 2017, compared with 11 percent of overall workers who plan to do the same, Mazur says. Nearly three-quarters of millennials who plan to start a new job or career in 2017 cite a salary increase as their primary influence. While employers should certainly keep an eye out for talented employees who show signs of jumping ship soon, the good news is that they dont need to worry about mass employee restlessness. According to Mazur, 72 percent of workers who do not plan to find a new job or career in 2017 attribute their decision to being satisfied with their current work arrangement.Politics Raise New ConcernsIn the 2016 election, theRepublican Party gained not only the White House, but also majorities in both houses of Congress. This means the economic climate of the U.S. is likely to change dramatically from the standards of the past eight years. Employees are not unfazed by this 20 percent of WorkSphere respondents said the election impacted their professional plans for 2017.For many Americans, a top concern any time a new president is elected is the economy and how potentially changing policies will influence business operations, Mazur says.A third of the workers surveyed said they were more worried about the economy and its impact on their careers than they were this time last year. This sentiment may be attributable to workers outlook on the incoming presidents economic platform, or it may be a byproduct of the general uncertainty that typically comes with any major change in government, Mazur says. As a result, some workers who may be interested in changing jobs or careers could potentially wait and see what happens in Washington before making any serious moves.Despite the uncertainties surround the current political situation, many workers remain optimistic about the future of the workplace. Spherion found that 60 percent of workers feel their jobs will still be relevant in five years. Another 22 percent of workers said they were interested in pursuing a second job or starting a side business, which Mazur says is a sign of confidence for the future.Scratching the New Year ItchTo get in front of employees who may do something drastic as they try to scratch their new year itch, executives need to be prepared to meet the demands of their workforces.Making more money (28 percent), taking more vacation time (19 percent), and improved work/life balance (19 percent) are among the top career-related resolutions for 2017, so employers may consider reevaluating their most valuable employees compensation structures, tweaking vacation policies or modifying the culture around taking vacation, and offering more flexible schedules to help employees achieve more balance in their work and personal lives, Mazur says. When asked about their overall resolutions, workers indicated that exercising more (55 percent), eating healthier (54 percent), and traveling more (34 percent) were alsotop priorities for 2017.These are areas employers might consider folding into the workplace, Mazur says. Employers should consider offering options that meet these goals, such as a wellness program or sabbatical programs that allow extended time off for travel. There are many ways to engage employees to improve retention, and every business must find out what its workforce wants. Whatever a company decides, the sure bet is that doing nothing will empower workers to chase those new year dreams possibly to your organizations detriment.

How to Make Your Boss Like You - The Muse

How to Make Your Boss Like You - The MuseHow to Make Your Boss Like You I want to be good at what I do, and I bet you do, too. Though the motivation may differ- a promotion, a raise, the Employee of the Month award, or to simply feel good about yourself- therbeies no denying that the desire to succeed is a powerful one. But in order to be successful, there are certain people we must work harmoniously with- the most important one being your boss. When it comes to your career, your manager plays a key role in your growth and achievements. And lets face it- if we dont get along with said boss, the role she begins to play is roadblock. And while there is, unfortunately, no secret formula to making your supervisor think youre great- and thus eliminating that barrier- below are some things you can do in every job that should earn you a big thumbs up. 1. Admit When You Make a MistakeNo one is perfect- slip-ups happen from time to time, and thats OK. Acknowledging you messed up will show acc ountability, help you learn, and prevent your boss from being blindsided when the error surfaces on its own (which it will). 2. Proofread Your EmailsYour performance is a direct representation of your manager. If youre shooting off shoddy emails, it can reflect badly on her and your team. Taking those extra seconds to read your message may also help you from sending a response laced with sass and frustration. 3. Meet Your DeadlinesYour manager, and likely others, are relying on you to finish your tasks in a timely manner. Getting things done by the time youre supposed to will make managing you a breeze. And lets be real- you know you loathe the people who constantly keep you waiting (in work and in life), so dont be one of them. 4. Let Your Boss Know ASAP if Youre Going to Miss a DeadlineWe already established you arent perfect (see number one), so we get it- sometimes a deadline cant be met. No matter who the finger of blame should be pointed at, your manager needs a heads up so sh e can plan accordingly. 5. Ask Questions When You Have ThemYou cant know it all- no one can (except maybe someone as successful as Adele). If you are unsure of something, its better to ask someone than to do something incorrectly or sit there and avoid it all day. 6. But, Do Try to Figure it Out Before You Reach Out for HelpShowing manahme and problem-solving skills are characteristics that will cause every manager to breathe a sigh of relief. But dont spend forever doing it- know when its time to throw in the towel. My golden rule? If you spend more than 30 minutes trying to find the answer, raise your white flag and let someone come to your rescue. 7. Save Any Grievances You Have for One-on-one MeetingsYou most likely arent going to agree with everything your boss says and does (if you do, lucky you). But instead of calling her out in front of the whole team, address her in private. No one likes to be thrown under the bus, especially in front of the people they manage. And when yo u do meet with her, make sure youre going about your feedback correctly. 8. Bring Solutions, Not ProblemsIf you have a problem, simply complaining about it is leid going to help change it. So when you address your manager in that one-on-one meeting, come to the table with suggestions, or at least the willingness to brainstorm some with her. 9. Acknowledge When Youre at CapacityWhile its tempting to say Yes to everything in an effort to prove youre a hard-working superstar, everyone has a threshold. Once you cross it, the quality of your work (and your work-life balance) will start to diminish. And that doesnt benefit anybody.10. Be a Team PlayerNeither your team nor your company can reach their full potential if you arent playing your part. And that limits your opportunity for success, too. The car cant run if one of the wheels is stuck in the mud. Dont be that wheel. 11. Take Work Off His PlateManaging you and your teammates isnt your boss only job. He has his own tasks, projects, and career goals, too. There are likely some items on his to-do list that you can do for him. Take a look at your workload, and if it isnt too heavy, offer to help make his list a little shorter. 12. Treat Her Like a PersonWhats that you say? Your boss is human, too? Yep And though the majority of your interactions involve her ensuring you are on task and have everything you need, its not her only concern in life. (Believe it or not, she probably has a guilty pleasure TV show she binge watches on the weekends, too. Scandal, anyone?) Make a note of personal things she mentions- her dogs name, a book shes currently reading- and ask about them when the time is right.13. Take Initiative to Further Your LearningJust because youre out of school doesnt mean your education has to end. Show you want to better yourself by signing up for a class, attending a workshop, or watching YouTube videos about cool Excel tricks. Want to hit the ball out of the park? Take it one step further and share wh at you learn with your team. 14. Offer to Mentor or Train a New Team MemberTeaching somebody the ins and outs of a position is tough work. It can even be a job in itself. So when your supervisor hires a new team member, offer to get him or her up to speed. This will allow her to continue focusing on the big picture and dedicating enough time to supervise the whole team.15. Learn From Your MistakesThere arent many things more frustrating than having to tell someone something over and over again. When you make a mistake, take the appropriate steps to prevent yourself from making that same blunder in the future. Write it down, add a task to your process, put a reminder in your calendar- whatever it takes, learning from your slip-ups is a true sign of growth (and also keeps your boss from pulling her hair out). 16. Know When to Stop TalkingYour voice is important and it should be heard. After all, youre a valuable part of the team. But that doesnt mean you should be the team chatterbox. Allow others to speak up, too, and make sure youre not just speaking because you like the sound of your voice.17. Show Your AppreciationYes, managing you is part of his job. And yes, his paycheck probably benefits because of it. But he is still taking time out of his busy schedule to ensure you have what you need and to provide support when you need it. When he does something you appreciate, say thank you and tell him how he helped you. Better yet? Sing his praises and write a recommendation on LinkedIn. Every supervisor has different management styles, and your boss may value some qualities in his or her employees over others. This will change with each job you have, but if you try to do (at least most of) the things above, youll receive your boss seal of approval. And while this seal may not be obvious (I mean, you arent going to get a trophy for being a good employee), it will show in the ways that count- more responsibility, a positive performance review, opportunities to manag e others, and occasionally that big promotion.
